has commenced the prosecution of 25 suspected oil thieves at the
Federal High Court, Yenagoa.
The suspects were arraigned before the court on Thursday.
The suspects were handed over to the corps recently by the Nigerian
Navy, Central Naval Command Headquarters.
The suspects were arrested aboard three vessels loaded with over two
million litres of stolen crude oil on separate operations by naval
operatives.
Their vessels -Merchant TankersVessel Eclips,MT Eil Tank 125and
Cotonou boat (large wooden boat) - were allegedly intercepted by the
Forward Operating Base on the waterways of the Niger Delta between
December 26, 2013 and January 25, 2014.
Commandant, NSCDC, Bayelsa Command, Mr. Desmond Agu, who paraded the
suspects before they were taken to the court said the corps would
allow the law to take its course.
Agu said, "The NSCDC wishes to make it clear to the public that the 25
crew members ofMTV Eclips, MT Eil Tank 125and wooden boat were handed
over to the NSCDC by the navy about a week ago."
The commandant warned those engaged in oil theft to desist from it,
saying strict penalties awaited those who indulged in the sharp
practices.
