Governor of Bayelsa State, Rear Admiral John Jonah, (retd), crashed
into the mangroves on sunday.
A soldier in the convoy was feared dead, while two others sustained
injuries. It was learnt that the accident occurred along Ogbia-Nembe
waterways.
It was gathered that the boat driver allegedly lost control of the
vessel, veered off the water and crashed into the mangroves about 8am.
A source said one of the soldiers attached to the Joint Task Force,
Operation Pulo Shield, sustained serious injuries and could be dead.
The source, who craved anonymity, said, "The boat ran into the
mangrove forest. About three of the soldiers were injured but the
injuries of one of them were serious. I think he is dead. But if he
survives, it will be by the grace of God."
It was learnt that the deputy governor was on his way to Nembe for a
private visit when the accident occurred.
Efforts to confirm the incident from the Senior Special Assistant to
the Deputy Governor on Media, Mr. Ebi Evinson, were unsuccessful as he
neither answered calls to his cell phone nor replied to a text message
sent to him.
When contacted, the Media Coordinator, JTF, Col. Onyema Nwachukwu,
confirmed the accident.
He, however, said the soldiers were not attached to the deputy
governor. He insisted that nobody died from the accident.
He added that the injured casualties had been treated in a clinic and
discharged.
Nwachukwu said, "No soldier is attached to the convoy of the deputy
governor. The soldiers were only behind the convoy when the boat
veered off the water and ran into the mangroves. Only two soldiers
sustained minor injuries. Nobody died."
